Magtec has welcomed a group of work experience and summer placement students to promote STEM careers and help inspire the next generation of engineers in the UK’s electric vehicle sector.

Our engineering team hosted young people from schools and colleges in Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and as far afield as Wales. They enjoyed hands-on experience under the supervision of expert staff in our design and manufacturing facility in South Yorkshire.

The students took part in assembling motors and vehicles on the shop floor, testing power controllers and building wiring harnesses. They also sampled our in-house software and CAD systems to gain an insight into our engineering approach.

Andy Sloan, engineering director at Magtec, said: “Work experience is a valuable route into rewarding STEM careers for young people and a road to recruitment into our fast-growing industry.

“For example, Caitlin Summers completed a placement as a year 12 student and impressed so much we offered her a flexible contract for the remainder of the school year. She has won a fixed contract with us and is now applying for an apprenticeship at the University of Sheffield.

“Caitlin’s story is a perfect illustration of the value of work experience and summer placements.”

As part of its commitment to supporting the development of engineering talent, Magtec is taking part in the Sheffield Industrial Projects Scheme for the second year running.

The Sheffield University initiative bridges the gap between academic theory and industrial practice by introducing second-year undergraduate electronic and electrical engineering students to real-world problem solving.
