Repowering: A British Solution to the EV Bus Challenge

At Magtec, we believe the future of UK transportation lies not only in new electric buses but also in the innovative repowering of existing diesel buses. While UK taxpayers are currently funding the purchase of new electric buses through the Zebra scheme, a significant portion of these grants is flowing to Chinese companies like BYD and Yutong. These companies dominate the electric bus market, despite the availability of proven British alternatives that can convert existing diesel buses into electric ones.

Repowering offers a unique, cost-effective solution. By retrofitting existing buses with electric drive systems, we can reduce the cost of transition by up to 50%, compared to building new electric buses from scratch. This process not only supports the UK’s sustainability goals but also strengthens local industries, boosts manufacturing skills, and extends the lifespan of buses already in circulation.

However, the current government funding structure does not recognise the potential of repowering. The Zebra scheme only provides grants for the purchase of new buses, which puts UK manufacturers at a disadvantage when competing with lower-priced foreign options. As a result, Chinese firms are receiving millions in subsidies, while British companies, like Magtec, which specialise in repowering, are left without support despite offering a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

We believe that repowering deserves the same level of investment and attention as new electric buses. With a level playing field for subsidies, we could significantly reduce costs, extend the lifespan of UK bus fleets, and keep the money circulating within our domestic supply chains.

Magtec’s expertise in converting diesel vehicles into electric ones is a game-changer. By unlocking the potential of existing buses, we can achieve the government’s ambitious net-zero targets at a fraction of the cost of new builds, without compromising on quality or performance.

We urge the government to consider repowering as a serious alternative and to make necessary adjustments to the funding framework, ensuring that UK businesses have an equal opportunity to compete. With the right support, Magtec and other British innovators can lead the way in sustainable fleet management, all while strengthening the UK’s economy and manufacturing base.

This is the time to level the playing field and support solutions that work for both the environment and the UK economy.
